Conference Theme

The consumer workforce provides leadership in moving towards a truly consumer-centred mental health system by using the unique and diverse expertise of lived experience to represent consumer views and perspectives, to advocate for systemic change, to improve quality of service, to provide peer support, and to implement rights-based, recovery and wellbeing-oriented practice.

Keynote Speakers

Janet Meagher Janet Meagher is a distinguished mental health consumer activist and advocate, Ms Meagher is currently the Divisional Manager- Inclusion, for Psychiatric Rehabilitation Australia. She is a representative of the Consumers’ Health Forum of Australia and a founding member of the NSW Consumer Advisory Group. Ms Meagher has been a Mental Health Consumer activist and advocate for over 30 years. She has lived with schizophrenia since the early 1970’s. Ms Meagher was a Churchill Fellow in 1994, investigating “Consumer empowerment & self-advocacy…in Great Britain, USA and Canada” and was made a Member of the “Order of Australia” (AM) in 1996 for “work as an advocate on behalf of people with mental illnesses and psychiatric disabilities”. Ms Meagher has a broad experience at national level in the last 20+ years and international consumer involvements for the last 15+ years. She is former Secretary of the World Federation for Mental Health and holds ministerial appointments on the National People with Disabilities and Carer Advisory Council and the Australian Suicide Prevention Advisory Council as well as being the sole consumer on the National Mental Health Commission.

Anne Beales Anne Beales is a Brighton-based campaigner. Anne has been awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) for services to mental health. A long-standing campaigner for mental health, Anne has fought tirelessly over many years to improve access to mental health services and the rights of those with mental health needs. Anne’s role as Director of Service-User Involvement at national mental-health charity Together, is unique within service-delivery organizations in the sector, and she was instrumental in setting up the National Service-User Network, a national network for local mental-health service-user groups. Anne was also responsible in developing Together’s Directorate of Service-User Involvement, a unique new arm of Together, which supports local service-user groups, informs and develops Together’s service-user involvement work, and offers advice to other organisations wishing to improve practice in this area.
