Royal Commission – Update

February 28, 2019 | Royal Commission

VMIAC issues a media release in response to Royal Commission announcements. We expressed disappointment that:

  • None of the commissioners have lived experience as a consumer
  • Abuse was not expressly included as part of the terms of reference

We know that these issues, amongst others, were of critical importance to many people.

‘It’s really disappointing that we don’t have a consumer commissioner. The people who’ve survived the mental health system have the most important expertise for this Royal Commission—but they’re not there.’ (Maggie Toko, VMIAC CEO)

‘For so long our stories of abuse have been ignored. This is an opportunity to acknowledge harms, and then move forward to build a system that helps rather than hurts people.’ (Vrinda Edan VMIAC Chair and Consumer Academic)
