Consumers Leading in Governance – Information for Participants

Overview of Consumers Leading in Governance (CLIG)

Consumers Leading in Governance (CLIG) is a governance training and development program developed by VMIAC for mental health consumers which offers both theoretical and practical learning experiences. Its objective is to build capacity of mental health consumers to participate in governance arrangements across the mental health system as recommended by the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

The Consumers Leading in Governance Training program was successfully piloted by VMIAC in 2022 and with support from the Department of Health will run again in 2024. Training Rounds VMIAC will be welcoming 20 students per training round (totalling 40 students across 2024).

We welcome applications from consumers who are looking to increase their consumer governance knowledge, leadership skills and understanding of the workings of a Board and its subcommittees.

Delivery Dates

The Consumers Leading in Governance program runs over four days, and you are required to attend all four days of delivery. Sessions will run from 9:00am to 5:00pm including breaks.

The CLIG program also involves a placement component. A placement requires attending a minimum of three Board and/or sub-committee meetings and meetings with a specified mentor within a partner organisation allocated to you by VMIAC. Some or all of these meetings will take place after work hours, and placements are to be completed between May 2024 and October 2024. Dates for these meetings will be negotiated once you are matched with a placement organisation.

This year, there will be one round of training held online in March, and one held face-to-face in May (within Melbourne CBD or surrounds).

Round 1 Online (proposed dates): 14th March, 15th March, 18th March and 19th March 2024.

Round 2 Face-to-Face (proposed dates): 9th May, 10th May, 13th May and 14th May 2024.

In order to participate in online delivery sessions, you must have access to reliable internet and a computer that can access Microsoft Teams and Zoom. Face to face delivery is subject to Covid-19 health and safety considerations and may be moved online if deemed necessary. Spaces are limited and we will attempt to allocate you to your preferred option.
