At VMIAC we have been engaged in a number of discussions and working groups about the implementation of the first of the Royal Commission’s recommendations.
You may be aware that we ran a series of consultations about the recommendations over the past six months and you can find the report on these here. This report, along with a video based on the findings, has been sent to the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, the Minister for Mental Health and to Mental Health Reform Victoria (MHRV).
As the more detailed discussions about the implementation have progressed, we have become concerned about the need to strongly consider how hospitals and other services are interpreting the recommendations. Our worry is that we will see more of the same if we don’t take some initiative and present other options.
For example, the Collaborative Centre, which will have research, clinical and wellbeing aspects, needs a thorough consideration by consumers. The peer led service is similar as is the expansion of HOPE to name a few.
Listed here are some of the issues that we think need deeper discussion and consideration:
- The Collaborative Centre
- Peer led service
- Consumer workforce with particular emphasis on a career structure
- Hospital in the Home
- HOPE
- Governance at every level
- Changing the system – ensuring the consumer voice is heard
- Acute beds
Therefore, we want to provide to do a deeper exploration into the detail of these topics from a consumer perspective.
Would you be interested in joining a series of individual working groups to delve into these topics and assist VMIAC in developing a position on what is needed if each of these issues are to work well for consumers? Some of these discussions will require more work than others.
